SaaS MVP: What to Build First
What to include in a SaaS MVP -tenancy, core loop, admin, billing hooks, and what to defer so early customers can pay without a multi-year platform build.
Direct answer
A SaaS MVP should prove one paying job for one buyer persona: sign-up, core workflow, basic roles, and a path to charge money -not a full multi-tenant enterprise suite. Include tenancy boundaries early enough that you do not rewrite the database after the first five customers. Defer SSO catalogues, complex entitlements matrices, and AI features until the core loop retains users.
Must-haves for a credible SaaS MVP
Auth, tenant isolation model, the primary workflow screens, an admin surface for you to support customers, audit on money-moving actions, and analytics for activation. Billing can start manual or with a thin Stripe/Razorpay integration -perfect dunning can wait. BillEase and agency ops products taught us support admin is part of MVP, not a phase-two luxury.
Multi-tenant decisions that are hard to reverse
Shared database with tenant_id vs separate schemas, how files are stored, and whether background jobs are tenant-aware. Make these explicit in discovery. Wrong defaults are expensive to migrate after you have paying data.
What to cut without apology
White-label theming, marketplace integrations, native mobile apps, and every report a salesperson dreamed up. If a feature is not required for the first ten paying accounts to succeed weekly, it is not MVP.
Cost and timeline framing
Many SaaS MVPs land in the bands discussed in our SaaS development cost guide -often a few months after discovery when scope stays ruthless. Quotes that promise a 'full platform' in eight weeks are pricing a different product.

Frequently asked questions
- Does a SaaS MVP need multi-tenancy on day one?
- You need a tenancy model you will not throw away. It can be simple, but customer data isolation should be intentional before you onboard unpaid friends as 'tenants.'
- Should billing be automated in the MVP?
- Automated helps, but a manual invoice path can be acceptable for the first handful of accounts if the product loop is proven. Do not block learning on perfect billing.
